REDUCE CAR EMISSIONS.

Walk, bike, and use public transportation where possible.

If you can’t go without a car right now, you still have options:

  1. Can you switch to, or start saving up for, a non-fossil car? Usually it’s best for the climate to use what you already have as long as possible. But fossil cars are one exception to this rule! On average, once you’ve driven an electric car for 23,000 km (about 14,000 miles), you’ve “repaid your carbon debt.” After that you’re polluting less than you would have in your old car. Check this calculator.
  2. Can you cut the distance you drive in half? For example, by working from home, combining work and personal trips?
  3. Can you double the number of people in your car (carpool), or cut in half the number of cars on the road (car-share with another family, or join a car-sharing program)?
  4. Can you use public transportation and advocate for more accessible transit options locally? Taking buses, trains, or other non-motorized transit options (biking or walking, for example) not only reduces car emissions but can also support systems that benefit the community. If transit isn’t accessible or convenient, engage with local leaders and initiatives to improve public transit infrastructure.
