TAKE CLIMATE ACTION THROUGHOUT YOUR ORGANIZATION.
Work with your colleagues and leadership to push your organization to support climate action on every level. Note that often the majority of emissions in your supply chain are not under your company’s direct control, but instead come from goods and services from your suppliers, customers, or clients. That makes it really important to work with those who you receive and give services to to address these so-called “Scope 3” emissions.
Here’s what organization-wide climate action can look like, drawn from the Drawdown-Aligned Business Framework:
– Actively seek out and choose suppliers who meet Science-Based Emissions Targets.
– Require your suppliers to adopt Science-Based Targets for emissions reductions. Check out this guide from normative.io on reducing value chain emissions.
– Phase out the use of offsets—we have to get to real zero.
– Engage employees and stakeholders on climate solutions, like the board of directors, leadership, key partners, customers, and clients.
– Embed climate considerations throughout business structures and processes.
– Phase out business practices incompatible with climate targets.
– Align company finance (pensions, investments, insurance, banks, asset managers) with Science-Based Targets.
– Advocate for climate policy at all levels of government.
In order to get your company to take these actions, you’ll need to find out who is in charge of these different areas, work with your colleagues to raise your concerns using your collective voice, and put together key points around why your company should care to make a change (i.e., how it benefits the business). Learn from other successful employees who have gotten their companies to be more climate forward, like this example from a former Microsoft employee.
